Skopje: Kale Fortress

My husband and daughter met me after my class at SEEU, and then we went exploring in the area around my campus:  the Kale Fortress, Sveti Spas, and kebabs at Destin's in the Old Bazaar.

About the Kale Fortress:

From my Skopje Museum Tour guide:

*Kale is the Turkish word for "fortress"

*The Kale Fortress is situated on the highest point of the city, overlooking the Vardar River.

*The first fortress was built in 6th century AD on a land that was inhabited during the Neolithic and Bronze ages (since 4,000 BC)...material for the fortress originated in the Roman city of Skupi (which was completely destroyed by an earthquake in 518 AD)

*It is believed that the fortress was built during the rule of Justinian I and then enhanced in the 10th and 11th centuries over the remains of the earlier fortress

*Since 2006 the Macedonian government has funded research and excavation of the site. In 2010 archeologists discovered the largest stash of Byzantine coins ever found in Macedonia

the view of SEEU from the fortress (usually I am in my classroom looking out on the fortress...)
