On the Road to/from Struga: Mekicite od Strazha

The drive from Skopje to Struga is about 2 and a half hours.  Of course, I head west to Tetovo weekly for my classes at the State University Tetova. And then we did head south from there to Mavrovo for the ski trip.  If you continue driving south from Mavrovo, you will come to Lake Ohrid (and then to Struga). It is not an easy drive, but it is scenic - and - mountainous!

What a treat that we made a quick stop for Mekicite od Strazha.

We got our mekicite to go - so I could bring some home for my daughter.

Back in the U.S. we call this "fried dough" or "elephant ears" or (in different form) "funnel cakes." These are enjoyed at carnivals, street festivals, theme parks. A special (occasional) treat that conjures up childhood memories of fun at the state fair.

As we unwrapped the package and sampled our mekicite -- for a brief moment we closed our eyes and imagined ourselves sitting on a stool in "Sleepy Hollow" in "Liberty Square" - the  in the shadow of Cinderella's Castle at the Magic Kingdom in DisneyWorld - savoring a funnel cake  (as we are wont to do).

But then - to open our eyes - and find oursleves enjoying mekicite in our apartment in Skopje, Macedonia. Priceless.

really sorry I can't get better pictures-the views of the snow-capped mountains are truly stunning
