Skopje: Museum of the City of Skopje

Every time we were in the neighborhood, the museum was closed. (I think we happened upon this area on Sundays.)  So we made an effort this Saturday to make it inside the City Museum of Skopje.

According to the book Skopje Museum Tour this museum was founded in 1949 and was housed in a few different locations before its current location in the former train station (since 1974). The train station was built in 1937 (and officially opened in 1940). Much of the train station was destroyed by the devastating earthquake on 26 July 1963.

In the pictures below you can see that the clock on the station has be permanently frozen at the time that the first earthquake hit: 5:17 am.

Inside the museum there was an exhibit about the earthquake, its devastation and the reconstruction. And on the ground floor there are many artifacts - from Ancient Rome - to thousands of years before.

Here is the museum's website http://www.mgs.org.mk/
