Porta Macedonia

This arch, completed in 2012 was part of the previous government's Skopje 2014 project.

We have tried several times to get to the top for a view of Skopje from there. (First on the weekend, when it was closed. We learned it was open Monday-Friday 9 am to 7 pm.  This timeframe was difficult for us, as when my daughter takes the "second bus" she gets home after 5 pm. By the time we have dinner and homework, 7 pm has come and gone)  Third time is the proverbial charm, as tonight we were welcomed by the staff - and we were able to take the elevator to the top of the arch.

As we were walking from our apartment, past the Ramstore Mall and the Skopje City Museum and then towards the arch on the pedestrian walkway, past, for example, the Memorial House of Mother Teresa - I was thinking of our first walk down this same path. With our friend Aneta the weekend when we first arrived. (She was instrumental (understatement) in helping us get settled here. We had just gotten my phone service taken care of at the Ramstore Mall, and we were off to lunch. At the time the roads were lined with mounds of snow. Tonight we were hoping to dine in a restaurant with air conditioning. It seemed like only yesterday!  How is it possible that our time in Skopje is coming to a close?!  We have tried to make the most of every day. If only there were more days!

Here are some of the views of the 4 sides of the viewing area.

It was a beautiful summer evening in Skopje, as we walked around the Center. And enjoyed one of our last dinners here.
